Learning Participatory Co-Design from Youth: Lessons from The Road Ahead, a Youth-Led Video Game

September 28, 2026 | 5:00 PM EST | Zoom

The Road Ahead is a narrative-focused video game exploring the nuanced experiences of well-being, distress, and rehabilitation among youth seeking to overcome social isolation through resilience and hope. The game is entirely designed and produced by youth, for youth.

This webinar will present the project with a focus on youth advisory members’ participation and how the project evolved over time. A youth member turned mentor will share their experiences participating in the project and the workflows they developed, highlighting their growing sense of project ownership and leadership. The project lead and the founding researcher will reflect on the beginnings of the project and highlight features of the platform currently in development, designed to accommodate and support the involvement of future youth members in the project.

Using a participatory co-design methodology, members of the youth advisory group and researchers share decision-making throughout the research process, including determining activities and methods, and establishing directions for future co-design activities. This methodology is embedded within a theoretical framework describing the system of activities through which youth can develop the skills and agency needed to guide and control the production of video games.
